Milking a Jackson-Pratt (JP) Drain

Milking a Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain involves squeezing the tubing to help move fluid and prevent blockages. This is done by stabilizing the drain at the insertion site, then pinching and sliding fingers down the tubing to push any clots or debris toward the collection bulb. It’s typically done several times a day while the drain is in place.

1. Preparation

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Gather any necessary supplies (e.g., alcohol wipes).
  • Locate the JP drain tubing and the collection bulb.

2. Milking the Drain

  • Stabilize: Hold the tubing firmly near the insertion site to avoid tugging.
  • Pinch & Slide:
    • With one hand, pinch the tubing close to the insertion site.
    • With the other hand, pinch a little lower down and slide your fingers toward the bulb, pushing fluid/clots along.
  • Repeat: Work your way down the tubing in segments until all debris is moved into the bulb.

3. Emptying the Drain (if needed)

  • Prepare: Place a clean cloth or paper towel underneath the bulb.
  • Open: Carefully remove the stopper from the bulb without spilling.
  • Empty: Pour contents into a measuring container or toilet.
  • Re-establish Suction:
    • Squeeze the bulb flat while holding the stopper open.
    • Replace the stopper, keeping the bulb partially collapsed to maintain suction.

4. Documentation

Record the amount and color of the drainage on your chart or log.

5. Frequency

  • Milk the drain 2–3 times per day, or more often if output decreases or swelling occurs.
  • Empty the drain when it is about half full.

6. Important Considerations

  • Avoid tugging: Be gentle to prevent pain or dislodgement at the insertion site.
  • Hygiene: Keep everything clean to reduce infection risk.
  • Follow instructions: Adhere to specific guidelines from your healthcare provider.
  • Contact your doctor: If you experience increased pain, redness, swelling, or can’t clear a blockage, notify your healthcare team immediately.
